A 22-year-old Zimbabwean student, briefly identified as Ziweya Leeroy, died on August 21 at AIIMS Bathinda, eight days after being brutally assaulted. The attack occurred near Guru Kashi University in Talwandi Sabo following an argument on August 12 over a baseball bat found in his car, police said. The next day, he was ambushed and beaten with sticks and sharp-edged weapons by a security guard, Dilpreet Singh, and eight accomplices. Leeroy sustained serious head injuries that ultimately proved fatal.
Authorities have so far arrested seven suspects and placed an additional two on the lookout list. An FIR was filed under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including attempted murder, rioting, and wrongful restraint. After his death, authorities upgraded charges to include murder. The investigation remains ongoing under the supervision of Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal.
The university student had been pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Radiology and Imaging Technology since 2023. The tragic death highlights concerns over safety of international students in Punjab and broader issues of campus security.
