The family of the Yemeni man killed by Kerala-origin nurse Nimisha Priya has firmly rejected any offer of pardon or blood money, insisting that her death sentence must be carried out. Talal Abdo Mehdi’s brother said the brief postponement of her execution was temporary, and that no reconciliation or compensation would change their demand for justice.
Under Yemen’s Sharia-based Qisas law, the family holds the power to grant clemency in exchange for a diyah (blood money) payment. Nimisha’s supporters, including Indian mediators, religious leaders, and government officials, had offered financial settlement and sought pardon. However, the victim’s family remains adamant: only retribution will satisfy them.
The family’s uncompromising position highlights the limits of diplomatic intervention. While efforts continue – including mediation by religious figures and talks with Yemeni tribal authorities – there has been no progress toward a resolution. The legal framework places final authority on the victim’s kin, leaving Nimisha’s fate in their hands as international efforts persist.
