Vaibhav Taneja, the Indian-origin Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Tesla since August 2023, has recently taken on a new role as treasurer and custodian of records for Elon Musk’s newly formed political group, the “America Party.” The Federal Election Commission filing signals Taneja’s deep involvement in the financial and regulatory side of the campaign, indicating Musk’s trust in his expertise.
A Chartered Accountant and Certified Public Accountant, Taneja holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Delhi University. He spent 17 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers before moving to SolarCity in 2016 as vice president and corporate controller. That same year, Tesla acquired SolarCity, and he transitioned into the company, serving as assistant corporate controller, corporate controller, and chief accounting officer before being appointed CFO.
In 2024, Taneja earned an astonishing $139 million, largely from stock options and equity awards, making it the highest compensation package recorded for a CFO – surpassing even some of the top CEOs in tech. His remuneration outpaced Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Alphabet’s Sundar Pichai, reinforcing his status among the best-paid executives in the industry.
Taneja’s new political role and record-breaking earnings reflect his growing prominence within Elon Musk’s inner circle. Managing finances for both Tesla and a political party adds a unique and influential dimension to his career as one of the most respected Indian-origin financial leaders on the world stage.
