The government has confirmed that the US deported Indians in record numbers in 2025, with 3,258 nationals sent back so far this year. Parliament was told the figure is the highest in 16 years, taking the total number of deportations since 2009 to 18,822.
External affairs minister S Jaishankar said India has raised the issue with US authorities to ensure that deported people are not mistreated, especially during flights. He said the government has asked that women and children are not restrained with handcuffs or chains during deportation.
The data was provided in response to questions from MPs about the rise in deportations and reports of poor treatment of Indian nationals. Officials said that irregular migration is often linked to illegal recruitment groups and travel agents promising quick entry routes to the US.
Jaishankar said the National Investigation Agency has investigated 27 human trafficking cases tied to such networks and arrested 169 people. He noted that many cases where the US deported Indians involve fraudulent agents offering fake jobs or visa guarantees.
The minister said coordination with US agencies is being strengthened to support Indian nationals and prevent recruitment scams. The figures underline the risks associated with irregular migration routes and the need for public awareness on safe travel practices.
