Indian nationals residing in the UK recorded the steepest increase in sexual offence convictions among all foreign national groups, jumping 257 percent from 28 cases in 2021 to 100 in 2024, Ministry of Justice data shows. This surge was closely followed by Nigerian (166%) and Iraqi (160%) nationals.
In broader terms of serious offences, Indian nationals also saw a significant rise—convictions nearly doubled, rising 115 percent from 273 to 588 during the same period, placing third after Egyptians and Algerians.
Despite the rise in convictions, Indian arrivals via small boats remain relatively low. In 2024, around 293 Indians arrived illegally, constituting about 15 percent of such entries at UK ports. Up through June 2025, that number dropped to 206.
Indian nationals remain one of the largest beneficiary groups in several UK immigration categories. In recent data, they received the highest number of work and tourist visas and were the largest group granted citizenship. The number of study visas granted to Indians also remained high—98,014 in the last year.
The data reflects a dual reality: while Indians are a prominent and growing demographic across several legal migration routes, rising conviction rates for serious crimes are a concerning indicator for both communities and policymakers.
