India is expected to raise concerns over China’s restrictions on technology imports and investment during high-level discussions on the sidelines of the upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to attend the September 12-13 summit with a sizeable business delegation. Ahead of the meeting, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has consulted Indian industry groups to identify key concerns that could be taken up with Chinese counterparts.
The discussions are likely to focus on investment restrictions faced by Indian companies in China and Customs-related hurdles affecting imports of high-tech products. Government officials are also examining restrictions imposed by Chinese authorities on certain technology-related items, which have affected Indian manufacturing.
The issue has become particularly significant for sectors dependent on Chinese supplies. India’s automobile industry, for instance, has been finding alternative ways to manage delays in the supply of rare earth magnets from China.
Industry executives expect India to seek greater reciprocity from Beijing, including the easing of procedural bottlenecks and sourcing restrictions.
The expected talks come amid a gradual thaw in India-China economic engagement. Recent developments have included the easing of some restrictions on foreign direct investment, the reopening of border trade through Nathu La and the resumption of direct flights.
However, concerns over trade barriers and market access remain. India is likely to use the BRICS Summit as an opportunity to press for smoother access to critical technology and industrial inputs while seeking a more balanced economic relationship with China.
