India’s efforts to bring back Mahadev Online Book case accused Sourabh Chandrakar from Oman may face delays after the UAE also submitted an extradition request for him, according to people familiar with the development.
Chandrakar, accused by Indian agencies of being one of the key promoters of the alleged ₹6,000-crore Mahadev online betting network, was detained by the Royal Oman Police in Muscat in June based on an Interpol Red Notice. Indian agencies, including the CBI and Enforcement Directorate, have since been pursuing his extradition.
The latest complication is the UAE’s request to Oman seeking Chandrakar’s transfer on charges that have not been publicly specified. According to the report, this could affect the timeline for India’s extradition efforts, even if New Delhi succeeds in its own case before Omani authorities.
Officials said Chandrakar had been living in the UAE after leaving India in 2019. He allegedly moved to Oman in April using a fake passport before being detained in Muscat. India had previously made extradition requests to the UAE, but those efforts did not result in his return.
The Mahadev Online Book case is one of India’s major investigations into alleged illegal online betting and money laundering. Indian agencies have accused Chandrakar and his associates of operating a network that enabled betting on card games, sports and other events. These allegations remain subject to legal proceedings.
The competing extradition requests now add another layer to an already complex international legal process. Oman will have to consider both India’s request and the UAE’s request, potentially delaying Chandrakar’s return to India.
