U.S. President Donald Trump has once again revived his campaign against BRICS, he has issued strong public warnings for the nations and called on India to reconsider its stance within the bloc. In his latest tweet on X, Trump described BRICS as a direct challenge to U.S. Dollar’s monetary dominance in world trade thus demanded alignment from its members. His tweet further adds clarity to the recent commentary which has portrayed BRICS as an “attack on the dollar.” He threatened that any country attempting to promote an alternative currency or distancing itself from the U.S. dollar would face punitive tariffs.
Trump also falsely claimed that BRICS was originally designed to “attack the U.S. dollar” and alleged that his previous interventions had weakened the bloc’s unity. He also warned that any attempt by member countries to promote an alternative trade currency would invite punitive tariffs from the USA.
India has so far remained mute publicly after the tweet, however this also sends a strong message which reaffirms its long-held position that its foreign and economic policies rest on national interest, not with any external pressure.
India has always been a strong propagator and supporter of multilateralism in geopolitics, this time also it is neither backing de-dollarisation nor denying alignment against Western financial order. In its brilliance it supports a multipolar world trade order it never endorses any movement to completely replace the dollar or isolate the West from trade links.
Analysts see Trump’s rhetoric and his social media posture as part of a broader push to fragment the non-Western alliances. American trade posture for the has shifted recently, with more scrutiny and tariff threats aimed at nations seen to be coordinating economically outside its influence.
India’s strategic priority remains protecting its independent voice in global affairs while preserving access to all geopolitical options and is expected to continue its dual approach into engaging earnestly with BRICS while deepening ties with the U.S. through trade talks and security dialogues.
Trump’s remarks might have reopened diplomatic fault lines at a time when India continues to assert its strategic autonomy on global platforms, protecting its independent voice in global affairs while keeping open the channels that serve its long-term economic and security interests.
Officials have often reiterated that India’s foreign policy decisions are guided by national interest, not by pressure from any camp.
India, however, is expected to maintain its balanced approach. It continues to engage actively within BRICS while simultaneously strengthening ties with the United States through platforms such as the Quad and bilateral trade negotiations.
