US President Donald Trump has said that a trade deal with India is “coming soon,” describing Indian PM Modi as a “tough negotiator but a great friend.” His remarks, made during a press briefing in Washington, indicate renewed optimism about bilateral trade discussions that had slowed in recent months.

Trump’s statement comes as both countries seek to expand cooperation in technology, defence manufacturing, and energy. However, no clarity has emerged yet on whether Washington will roll back the penal tariffs imposed on select Indian goods during earlier trade disputes. The US has also continued to seek transparency on India’s oil imports from Russia, an issue that remains a sticking point.

Analysts note that the proposed deal could significantly boost India-US trade volumes, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, engineering, electronics, and agricultural exports. A balanced agreement, they say, could help India secure better access to US markets while allowing American companies greater entry into India’s digital and services sectors.

While timelines are still uncertain, both sides appear to be signalling intent to resolve outstanding issues before the next bilateral summit. The anticipated deal could mark a key milestone in India-US economic relations, deepening strategic and commercial ties between the world’s two largest democracies.
