Donald Trump has claimed that during a tense confrontation between India and Pakistan he intervened by warning both countries with 350 per cent tariffs unless hostilities ceased.
Speaking at a US–Saudi investment forum, Trump said he told India and Pakistan: “you can go at it with nuclear weapons…but I’m putting a 350 per cent tariff on each country — no more trade with the United States.”
He also claimed that Narendra Modi called him following the warning, stating “we’re not going to go to war”, and quoted Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as expressing thanks for “saving millions of lives”.
New Delhi has firmly denied any mediation by Washington or such trade threats, maintaining that the cessation of hostilities in May was reached through direct military talks between the countries’ top defence officials.
The statements reflect heightened tensions in US-India relations, illustrating how trade policy and diplomacy are becoming deeply intertwined in the era of global strategic competition.
