India-US ties received a public show of warmth as US President Donald Trump praised PM Modi during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, even as the two countries continue to navigate trade negotiations and regional security concerns.
Speaking before talks with the Indian leader, Trump described PM Modi as one of the toughest negotiators he has encountered and praised his leadership style. He also recalled the “Howdy Modi” event in Houston and expressed his desire to visit India in the future, underscoring the importance Washington places on its relationship with New Delhi.
The meeting marked the first in-person interaction between the two leaders in more than 16 months and came at a significant moment for India-US ties. The two countries are engaged in negotiations over a proposed trade agreement, while also managing differences on tariffs, market access and other economic issues.
Trump said the United States and India were “very close” to reaching a trade deal and expressed confidence that ongoing discussions would yield positive results. Officials from both countries are expected to continue negotiations in the coming weeks to address remaining areas of concern.
Regional security also featured prominently in the discussions. PM Modi highlighted the importance of maritime security and the protection of seafarers operating across international shipping routes. The issue has gained urgency following recent tensions in West Asia and concerns over disruptions to key trade corridors, including the Strait of Hormuz.
The leaders also reviewed broader cooperation in areas such as defence, technology, energy and strategic partnerships. Trump reiterated his support for stronger bilateral engagement, while both sides signalled their intention to maintain momentum in one of the world’s most consequential partnerships.
The meeting reflected an effort by both governments to emphasise cooperation and shared interests as they seek to advance economic ties and address emerging regional challenges.
