Newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where the two leaders discussed a wide range of bilateral issues, including trade, defence, and technology cooperation.
This was Gor’s first meeting with Prime Minister Modi since his appointment. He said the two also spoke about the growing importance of critical minerals for both countries — a sector seen as vital for clean energy and high-tech manufacturing.
In a statement from the U.S. Embassy, Gor said, “President Trump considers Prime Minister Modi a great and personal friend.”
Modi, in a post on X, welcomed the U.S. envoy, writing, “Glad to receive Mr. Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the U.S. to India. I am confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.”
Its’s a visit that comes at a critical juncture in India’s bilateral relationship. The visit marks one of Gor’s first diplomatic outreach efforts following his appointment and it came days after the US Government had cast a shadow over the otherwise robust strategic partnership.

While the official statements maintained a cordial tone, many diplomatic observers note that the meeting comes amid a delicate phase in economic diplomacy between the two countries. The new regime by US President Donald Trump from trade obligations to rise in Visa fee along with outsourcing laws which brought certain areas in threat where India has long sought preferential access.
Gor’s visit therefore, is being closely watched for signs from Washington on its willingness to recalibrate the trade dynamics and visa situations and to reaffirm its commitment to the strategic partnership that spans trade, defense, technology and climate cooperation.
Officials laid out briefly from the discussions say Gor is expected to meet the key representatives of Indian Government, business leaders and think tank members during his stay, focusing on rebuilding confidence and dialogue after recent policy frictions.
This visit also carries symbolic weight as both nations prepare for high-level interactions later this year, including the next round of the India-US 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue.
For India, Gor’s early engagement offers an opportunity to reset the narrative by ensuring that economic disagreements do not overshadow broader convergence on Indo-Pacific strategy, innovation, and global governance.
As the new U.S envoy steps into the role in India, all eyes will be on how it navigates the
complex terrain of balancing the strategic alignment with economic assertiveness,
shaping the next chapter of one of the world’s most consequential partnerships.
