Mohammed Nizamuddin, a 30-year-old software engineer from Mahabubnagar, Telangana, was fatally shot by Santa Clara police following a reported clash with his roommate. The incident has sparked widespread concern and allegations of racial discrimination, prompting calls for a thorough and impartial investigation.
According to the Santa Clara Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 6:08 AM on September 3, 2025 regarding a knife stabbing incident. Upon arrival at the reported residence they found Nizamuddin allegedly pinning his injured roommate to the ground with a knife raised. Officers fired four shots, one hit Nizamuddin who was later declared dead. However, the roommate remains hospitalized with multiple injuries. The police stated that their actions were taken to prevent any further harm.
Nizamuddin’s family back in the country disregards the police narrative, claiming that he was the one who called for help and was unjustly killed. They describe him as a quiet and religious individual who had previously faced workplace harassment and discrimination. In a LinkedIn post prior to the incident, Nizamuddin alleged experiences of racial hatred, wage fraud, wrongful termination, and food poisoning. He condemned what he termed the “racist white American mentality” and called for an end to such behavior.
The Indian Consulate General in San Francisco expressed deep sorrow over Nizamuddin’s death and is actively engaged with U.S. authorities to gather details about the incident. The family has appealed to India’s Ministry of External Affairs for assistance in repatriating Nizamuddin’s remains, which are currently at a hospital in Santa Clara pending legal formalities.
The Santa Clara Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the incident. However, the family and community members are calling for a transparent and impartial inquiry, emphasizing the need to address potential racial biases in the handling of the case.
As the investigation continues, the tragic death of Mohammed Nizamuddin has brought attention to broader issues of continued racial discrimination and the treatment of immigrant students and professionals in the United States.
