Mumbai: Tata Communications has acquired a 51 per cent stake in US-based AI solutions startup Commotion for ₹227 crore (about 26 million dollars), strengthening the Tata Group’s push into artificial intelligence-led businesses. Commotion, a three-year-old firm with a subsidiary in India, offers AI-driven workflow and automation tools.
The deal comes as the wider Tata Group accelerates its AI strategy. Just last month, TCS announced a ₹9,180 crore investment to expand its AI-focused data centre infrastructure, signalling a group-wide shift toward AI-enabled operations and services.
Tata Communications said integrating Commotion’s capabilities will advance its transition into an AI-first organisation, enabling the company to embed automation and intelligent systems across its global enterprise offerings. The share purchase was executed through Tata Com’s wholly owned subsidiary in the Netherlands.
Out of the total deal value, nearly 16 million dollars was used to buy shares from Commotion’s founders and external investors, while the remaining 10 million dollars will be infused as capital to support the startup’s growth.
Industry experts say the acquisition aligns with a broader trend of Indian technology companies seeking international AI assets to accelerate innovation and improve competitiveness. For Tata Communications, the move is expected to enhance its digital solutions portfolio, particularly in enterprise automation, cloud, and network intelligence.
The company said the partnership will help scale Commotion’s technology globally, while giving Tata Communications a stronger foothold in AI-led enterprise transformation services.
