Sikh Soldiers in Italy are being remembered through a growing effort by the Sikh diaspora to preserve the stories of those who fought and died on Italian fronts during the World Wars. An Italy-based voluntary organisation has spent years documenting their sacrifices and building memorials in places where they fell.
The World Sikh Shaheed Military Memorial Committee (WSSMMC) has been leading the initiative since 2016, with support from the Italian government. The group has so far identified and memorialised more than 2,000 Sikh soldiers who died during the conflicts.
Earlier this month, the organisation installed a memorial wall bearing the Khanda at Forlì, near Bologna. The stone memorial carries the names and photographs of Sikh soldiers who lost their lives on Italian soil. Representatives also held an ardas and Akhand Path in their memory and invited mayors from nearly 20 Italian communes to participate in commemorative events.
The effort has roots going back to the early 2000s, when members of the Sikh community in Italy, along with Sikh historian Bhupinder Singh Holland and Italian researcher Dr Roman Rossi, began working to locate and commemorate the soldiers.
Volunteers have since organised memorial ceremonies and prayer services at sites associated with Sikh participation in the World Wars, including Cassino, Florence, Ravenna and the Sangro River.
The initiative seeks to bridge a gap between official military records and community memory. While Commonwealth records document the soldiers’ military service, the committee argues that they do not always capture the wider significance of Sikh regiments or how their sacrifices are remembered by the community.
Interestingly, local Italian communities have also become involved, with volunteers showing growing interest in learning about the Sikh soldiers who died on their land.
Sikh Soldiers in Italy are thus being remembered not only through military archives but through memorials that connect Indian military history, Sikh identity and Italian local memory.
