A banned Khalistani group, Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), has announced a 12-hour “siege” of the Indian consulate in Vancouver, Canada on September 18. The demand targets what SFJ claims are “spy networks” operated by the Indian missions in Canada.
SFJ released a poster depicting India’s High Commissioner Dinesh Patnaik with a target on his image, labeling him part of what it calls, “India’s Hindutva terror in Canada.” The group also tried to link its action to the 2023 parliamentary debate in Canada on the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, accusing Indian consular offices of continuing surveillance against Khalistan supporters.
Indian authorities have denounced the threat, while Canadian officials pointed to the unacceptable nature of promoting violence abroad. The incident spotlights mounting tensions between diaspora politics and diplomatic security, and challenges India’s efforts to manage its international missions amid complex cross-border issues.
