Saudi Arabia has announced the arrest of more than 7,700 individuals for alleged violations of residency, labour and border regulations during a nationwide enforcement campaign. The development has drawn attention across the Gulf region, particularly among expatriate communities, including a large number of Indian workers living in the Kingdom.
According to Saudi authorities, the arrests were made during coordinated inspections conducted across multiple regions between late May and early June. Officials said those detained were found to be in violation of residency permits, employment regulations or border security laws.
Saudi Arabia has intensified enforcement measures in recent years as part of broader efforts to regulate the labour market and ensure compliance with immigration rules. Authorities stated that legal procedures are underway for those detained, while individuals found employing, transporting or sheltering violators could also face penalties.
The Kingdom hosts one of the world’s largest expatriate populations, including millions of workers from South Asia. Indian nationals form one of the largest foreign communities in Saudi Arabia, making developments related to labour and residency regulations closely watched by both workers and employers.
Officials reiterated that foreign residents should ensure their documentation remains valid and comply with local laws to avoid penalties. Saudi authorities have also encouraged employers to regularise the status of workers and adhere to labour regulations.
The latest crackdown reflects the Kingdom’s continuing efforts to strengthen oversight of its labour market while balancing economic reforms and workforce requirements. Experts note that compliance campaigns of this nature have become more frequent as Saudi Arabia advances its Vision 2030 reform programme.
