India’s energy and trade landscape is undergoing a dramatic realignment. U.S. President Donald Trump’s
sweeping tariffs on trade, which faced unprecedented judicial pushback on its own. Now, Russia has stepped
in to deepen oil discounts for India, reshaping global market equations.

Experts suggest there is a clear overlap in timing between the SCO summit and Moscow’s offer of oil
discounts to India, as Prime Minister Modi and President Putin shared the stage at the SCO Summit in
Tianjin. While reports do not directly state that the summit itself caused the price cuts.

What is evident, however, is that the summit created the right diplomatic climate with both the leaders
showcasing solidarity and reaffirming their “special partnership.” The strengthened political chemistry at the
summit almost certainly paved the way for Moscow to extend such favorable terms.

When India first pivoted to Russian crude after the Ukraine war(2022), the discounts hovered around $6–8
per barrel below Brent. By early 2024 the discount narrowed to just $1–2 as Chinese demand competed.
Now Moscow has restored it to about $3-4 per barrel below Brent. India’s refineries could save around $6–9
    million per 2-million-barrel shipment.

Every shipload of Russian oil docking at Indian ports now delivers more than just fuel, it will deliver $6–9
million in savings per 2-million-barrel cargo. Major Refiners like Reliance and IOC (Indian Oil corp.) are
the biggest beneficiary. Reliance Industry is said to have secured $6 billion benefits since 2022, while the
wider oil industry pegged at $8–10 billion, turning Moscow’s discount strategy into a golden subsidy for
    India’s energy security.

For Moscow, discount on sale of crude oil is more than commerce. It is strategic diplomatic statecraft.
Amidst the ongoing Ukraine situation and USA interventions, keeping India as a committed and major
buyer, secures an Asian outlet for Russian oil. For New Delhi, as the western trade fluctuations are taking
place, this deal provides a shield against inflation, ensures energy security, and strengthens its hand in wider
trade negotiations, particularly as the U.S. judiciary has now shaken the foundation of Trump’s tariff policy.
In essence, oil has become a currency of trust among two Asian giants, Russia wins geopolitical breathing
space, while India gains both affordable energy and leverage against Washington’s trade unpredictability.
