As the rupee continues to fall against the US dollar, Indian students and their families are facing rising anxiety over education costs in the United States. What began as detailed budgeting for tuition, housing and everyday expenses is now turning into financial uncertainty, as families recalculate long-term plans and worry about how to manage the higher burden.
Education counsellors say that with the rupee touching a record low, parents and students are reaching out in large numbers. Students are unsure whether studying abroad will become unaffordable, while parents are concerned about funding, scholarships and whether they will need to cut back on their plans. Many are also reconsidering deposits, visa processes and early decisions, hoping the currency will stabilise before they commit.
Consultants say the emotional strain has become visible, with families reworking budgets late into the night and some questioning whether the US remains a viable destination. The sense of uncertainty is pushing students to explore financial planning tools, education loans and alternative options. Some counsellors have begun advising students to keep a backup plan in case the US becomes too expensive. With the rupee crossing 90 against the dollar, choosing another country is being discussed more seriously for the first time.
In 2024-25, Indian students spent a significant amount on education and living expenses in the US, making India one of the top sources of international students. As the situation evolves, families hope for currency stability and clearer policies that can support their academic plans.
