Although diplomatic relations between India and Canada have deteriorated, individuals seeking a backdoor passage to the United States via the North American country are far from halting. According to US Customs and Border Protection data, 3,059 of the 8,076 Indians arrested for illegally entering the country through various routes in September were apprehended on the US-Canada border. This is the most such arrests in a single month between October 2022 and September 2023. It also coincides with the row over Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accusing Indian agencies of involvement in terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing.
Many illegal immigrants, primarily from Gujarat, have reportedly settled in Canada or are awaiting a chance to enter the United States. In August, 2,327 illegal immigrants were apprehended attempting to enter the United States. This figure increased to 3,059 in September, according to a report by The Times of India. Four unaccompanied minors were among those detained. Four youngsters were joined by a family member, and 530 were accompanied by their parents and siblings. The most populous category included 2,521 single adults.

Illegal immigrants from India are known to enter the United States through the Mexican border rather than the Canadian border. However, the number of illegal immigrants captured on the US-Mexico border in September—3,862—was virtually equal to the figures published by US border guards. Between February and March of this year, 1.9 lakh Indians were apprehended while attempting to enter the US illegally.\
