Punjabi cinema lost one of its most beloved comedians with the passing of Jaswinder Bhalla, who died on the morning of August 22 in Mohali. He was 65. Bhalla, known for his brilliant comic timing and memorable roles in films like Carry On Jatta, Gaddi Chaldi Hai Chhalla Maarke, Jind Jaan, and Band Baaje, had been battling illness in recent months.
The news shocked fans and colleagues alike, prompting an outpouring of grief from public figures and leaders. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his sorrow on X, describing Bhalla’s departure as deeply saddening and paying tribute to “Uncle Chatra,” a name that resonated with decades of laughter. “May Waheguru grant him peace,” Mann wrote. AAP leader and former Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia joined the tributes, recalling how Bhalla’s art brought smiles to millions.
The funeral is scheduled for August 23 at noon, at the Balongi cremation ground in Mohali. For generations, Bhalla’s wit and warmth defined Punjabi entertainment, leaving a legacy of joy and laughter.
