Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun a two-day official visit to Japan (August 29–30), for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. This is his first formal summit with Japan’s new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and his eighth visit to Japan since 2014, this highlights the steady growth of the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between the two nations.

In Tokyo, PM Modi was welcomed with Indian classical dances, bhajans, and Gayatri Mantra chants, reflecting the cultural bond between India and Japan. A Japanese admirer summed up the mood, saying,“The best days have come for me”.
The visit comes at a time of global trade uncertainty and shifting power equations in Asia. Modi’s message is clear, India offers political stability, rapid economic growth, and an expanding consumer base. He reminded Japanese investors that they have already put in USD 40 billion, and nearly 80% of firms plan further expansion.
The focus of the visit is an ambitious economic vision. Japan has pledged nearly ¥10 trillion (USD 68 billion) in investments for India over the next decade, with a strong focus on semiconductors, clean & renewable energy, high-tech manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals.
The flagship project under this partnership is also the key highlight, which is the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed bullet train project, the advanced rail corridor, where Japan’s cutting-edge E10 Shinkansen technology is expected to play a decisive role.
While addressing business leaders in Tokyo, PM Modi urged companies to see India as a trusted global partner.
“Come, make in India, make for the world.” He positioned India as a “talent powerhouse” that complements Japan’s innovation, engineering and technological edge.
Beyond trade and investments this visit also carries a broader geopolitical message.
India-Japan partnership is not just an economic arrangement but a vision for the future of Asia. With technology, defense, and cultural diplomacy at its heart, this renewed engagement is poised to play a pivotal role in the region’s stability and prosperity in the coming decade.
