Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday proposed four new initiatives aimed at strengthening global cooperation and sustainable development at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg. Addressing the session on inclusive and sustainable growth, the Prime Minister said India’s civilisational values can play a crucial role in shaping a more equitable future.
Modi announced the creation of a Global Traditional Knowledge Repository, an effort to document and preserve time-tested models of sustainable living. He said the initiative will help pass on shared wisdom to future generations and promote holistic wellbeing.
Underscoring India’s commitment to Africa’s growth, the Prime Minister unveiled the Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative, which follows a train-the-trainers approach. The programme aims to produce one million certified trainers in Africa over the next decade, who would then help skill millions of youth across the continent.
“Africa’s development is essential for global progress. This initiative will have a multiplier effect by building local capacity and strengthening long-term development,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister also proposed a G20 Global Healthcare Response Team to provide rapid and coordinated action during health emergencies and natural disasters. The team would bring together trained medical professionals from G20 countries ready for swift deployment in crisis situations.
Calling for stronger international cooperation against narcotics-linked extremism, Modi put forward a G20 Initiative on Countering the Drug-Terror Nexus. He urged G20 nations to integrate tools of finance, governance and security to effectively combat the drug-terror economy and halt the spread of dangerous substances such as fentanyl.
“We are stronger when we work together. Only through coordinated efforts can we weaken the drug-terror nexus and protect our societies,” he said.
PM Modi is currently on a three-day visit to South Africa, attending the G20 Summit and engaging with world leaders on global development, security, and cooperation.
