Shumeet Banerji, a Person of Indian Origin and non-executive director on the BBC Board, has resigned from his position following internal turmoil linked to the controversy over a doctored Trump broadcast. In his resignation letter, Banerji said he was not consulted on key developments leading to the departures of director-general Tim Davie and BBC News chief executive Deborah Turness, raising concerns about governance practices at the organisation.
The leadership crisis began after a leaked internal memo by Michael Prescott, a former adviser to the BBC’s Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee, revealed that a Panorama programme had spliced together unrelated sentences from a January 6, 2021 speech by former US President Donald Trump, implying support for rioters at the US Capitol. The disclosure triggered scrutiny over editorial standards and decision-making, prompting Davie and Turness to step down.
Banerji, who joined the BBC Board in January 2022, is the founder of Condorcet LP and serves as an independent director with Reliance Retail Ventures, Jio Platforms and Reliance Industries. He holds an MBA from Delhi University and has been regarded as part of the BBC’s effort to broaden global expertise and reinforce board-level oversight.
A BBC spokesperson confirmed Banerji’s resignation, stating that his term as a non-executive director was due to end in December and that the broadcaster thanked him for his service. His exit coincides with continuing review efforts, including hearings by MPs examining governance failures surrounding the Trump broadcast.
The BBC Board is expected to announce further appointments as it works to stabilise internal structures, rebuild confidence and reassure audiences about editorial integrity. Banerji’s departure adds to mounting pressure on the corporation at a time when impartiality, public trust and regulatory expectations remain under close watch.
