A US-based couple of Indian origin has ended their 17-year stay in America and moved back to India, saying that high healthcare costs and poor support during childbirth became unbearable. Their story, shared in a viral Instagram video, has struck a chord with many.
The woman in the couple explained that after the birth of their twins, she received just six weeks of maternity leave — hardly enough time to recover and adapt. On top of that came steep medical bills: the family reportedly had to meet a $14,000 annual deductible before insurance coverage would begin. Their lowest-cost insurance plan still demanded $1,600 per month in premiums and a $15,000 deductible. Each doctor visit, test, or even routine checkup translated into long waits, high co-pays and mounting financial anxiety.
Deciding they did not want to raise their children under such stress, the couple returned to India, saying they found quicker access to doctors, easier appointments and a support system that felt more like home. What they were really after, the woman said, was not perfection — but a life where healthcare doesn’t feel like a luxury.
Their decision has resonated widely, reopening conversations around the challenges faced by Indian-origin families abroad — especially when healthcare, family and support systems come into question.
