Mr Mehra’s story and journey is of selfless service, compassion and perseverance.
When Mr Mehra first arrived in Munich in 1978, the Indian community was little more than a handful of scattered families. The city felt vast and unfamiliar, yet he quickly discovered that even a small group could create a sense of home far away from home.
Determined to bring people together, he helped unite the few Indian families living in the region at the time. What began as simple gatherings soon grew into a cherished tradition—celebrating Diwali together every year. For nearly 25 years, these get-togethers became a symbol of unity, warmth, and cultural continuity, lighting up Munich just as brightly as any Indian neighbourhood during the festival.
Germany, even back then, welcomed Indians with warmth. Mr Mehra often recalls how Germans had a “soft corner” for Indian people—something that only deepened as the community grew. Over time, he and other Indians in Munich earned immense respect within local society, creating bonds that remain strong even today.
A key chapter in his journey began when the Indian Consulate in Munich opened 22 years ago. From the very first day, Mr Mehra maintained a close relationship with consulate officials. Whenever someone faced issues—whether with documentation, emergencies, or other concerns—he stepped in, working closely with the consulate to ensure that no Indian felt alone in a foreign land.
His contribution extended beyond community events and administrative help. In some of the most difficult moments, when Indians in Munich passed away with no family to support them, Mr Mehra took responsibility for their last rites. With compassion and dignity, he ensured they received proper farewell rites—an act that touched many hearts and cemented his place as a pillar of the diaspora.
From building community celebrations to supporting people in their toughest hours, Mr Mehra’s life in Munich has been marked by service, togetherness, and unwavering dedication to his roots. His journey reflects not just his own story, but the story of an entire community that grew, thrived, and found a home in Germany.
