Amid LG Electronics India’s landmark IPO, which also showcased not just a significant financial milestone but the company’s commitment to the Indian market, the focus shifted towards India not just a consumer market but also in a key role for global innovation.
LG, a South Korean electronics giant, which has shared a deep rooted history with India, is further strengthening its technology footprint in India as part of a larger plan to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor capabilities globally.
The company is aiming to tap into India’s growing pool of talent with software engineers and researchers to power its next generation of smart devices and chip-based solutions. According to a recent Economic Times report, LG Electronics is intending to double its R&D workforce in India by 2027, with largely focusing on AI, robotics, and semiconductor-related technologies. The company currently employs around 500 R&D professionals in India and intends to expand collaborations with local software firms and academic institutions.
Hong Ju Jeon, Managing Director of LG Electronics India, who recently addressed the NSE listing ceremony in Hindi. emphasising that India is not just a market but an “innovation hub,” reflecting the company’s strategy to combine its hardware expertise with India’s deep pool of software talent. Together, the IPO and the technology expansion signal LG’s long-term India-centric growth, positioning the country at the heart of its global AI and semiconductor ambitions.
LG’s is also pushing forward its alignment with the global initiative, LG Smart Life Solutions, under which the company plans to invest over $40 billion globally by 2030 in areas including AI, semiconductors, and green technologies. The India expansion is seen as a natural progression of that roadmap, given the country’s deep pool of tech talent and its supportive policy environment.
Globally, India has become a critical base for semiconductor research and design. The Government data shows the country already employs around 125,000 semiconductor design engineers, representing nearly 20% of the global total, according to the Boston Consulting Group and the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY).
Through the Semicon India Programme, launched in 2022 with an outlay of ₹76,000 crore, New Delhi is offering incentives to global companies setting up semiconductor and design facilities in India.
Industry experts believe LG’s renewed focus on India reflects a larger shift among global technology firms. “India has become the world’s R&D lab for intelligent hardware,” said Rachit Mathur, semiconductor analyst at Counterpoint Research. “Multinationals are realizing that real innovation now depends on software-defined chips and AI systems — and India leads in that talent.”
LG’s R&D operations in Bengaluru, Noida, and Pune are expected to play a bigger role in the company’s product development cycle, working on AI-based appliances, IoT integration, and embedded systems. The expansion is also expected to support LG’s broader semiconductor ambitions as it diversifies beyond consumer electronics.
With the global electronics industry increasingly driven by AI and chip intelligence, LG’s India strategy positions the company at the intersection of two powerful trends, the digitization of manufacturing and the globalization of software-led innovation.
