India and Russia are set to engage in a new round of high-level diplomatic discussions as External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar arrives in Moscow for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday. The meeting comes at a time when both nations are seeking to reinforce their longstanding strategic partnership while addressing rapidly evolving global developments.
According to official statements, the two Ministers will review upcoming political engagements, including scheduled summits and ministerial interactions that will shape the next phase of bilateral cooperation. The discussions are expected to cover a comprehensive agenda spanning defence, energy security, trade, regional stability, and multilateral cooperation.
Sources indicate that the talks will also delve into key international issues, including the situation in Ukraine, developments in West Asia, cooperation under BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and emerging challenges in the Indo-Pacific. Both sides are likely to assess how global power shifts are influencing their shared diplomatic priorities.
India and Russia have maintained steady dialogue despite geopolitical turbulence, and Jaishankar’s visit underlines New Delhi’s commitment to preserving strategic autonomy while engaging all major powers. For Moscow, the talks are part of a broader effort to strengthen partnerships in Asia as it navigates heightened tensions with Western nations.
Energy cooperation, trade settlements in national currencies, and the expansion of connectivity routes such as the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) are also likely to feature prominently in the meeting. With India emerging as one of Russia’s top oil buyers and both nations seeking to stabilise supply chains, economic discussions are expected to carry substantial weight.
Diplomatic observers note that Lavrov and Jaishankar share a longstanding rapport, having met multiple times over the past three years amid global disruptions. Their Moscow meeting is expected to reaffirm the durability of India–Russia ties while opening new avenues for cooperation.
