Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins has strongly condemned a recent wave of racially motivated attacks against the Indian community, describing them as “despicable” and contrary to the nation’s values. In his statement, he expressed deep appreciation for the Indian diaspora’s contributions in sectors like healthcare, culture, business, and public service, calling their presence “a source of enrichment and generosity” to Irish society.
Higgins emphasized that targeting immigrants contradicts Ireland’s traditions of migration, hospitality, and shared humanity. “To forget that is to lose a part of ourselves,” he said.
The remarks follow several alarming incidents, including the assault of a six-year-old Indian-origin girl. In response to the violence and safety concerns, Irish authorities and community groups have postponed the annual India Day celebrations, and the Indian Embassy in Dublin issued a safety advisory with emergency contacts.
Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris also publicly condemned the attacks and thanked the Indian community for its positive impact on Ireland. The rising number of hate crimes has recently prompted national concern and a call for greater vigilance against racism
