IndiGo has inducted its first-ever all-women batch of aircraft maintenance engineers (AMEs), marking a significant milestone in promoting diversity and inclusion in the aviation sector. The announcement was made on National Engineering Day.
The batch consists of 33 women technicians who will join IndiGo’s engineering department, which maintains a fleet of more than 400 aircraft. The airline recorded a Technical Dispatch Reliability score of 99.89% in FY25, underscoring its focus on safety and operational excellence.
As part of their onboarding, the new AMEs completed a seven-day induction programme that included mentoring by senior leaders and experienced women engineers.
IndiGo said the initiative highlights its commitment to increasing female representation in technical and leadership roles. Currently, women make up 44.8% of its total workforce, including 791 female pilots as of 2024—the highest number for any Indian carrier.
India is a global leader in gender diversity in aviation, with over 15% of its pilots being women, compared to the global average of just 5%. According to government data, other Indian carriers such as Alliance Air and SpiceJet have the highest proportion of women pilots at 16–17%.
While pilot data is available, there is no detailed breakdown of women working as AMEs across airlines. In FY25, 379 initial AME licences and 211 category extensions were issued, with more than 35,000 candidates appearing for AME examinations.
IndiGo’s latest move is expected to pave the way for greater participation of women in aviation engineering and strengthen the pipeline for technical talent in the industry.
