India has extended its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) network into Qatar, enabling Indian tourists and residents there to use UPI at Lulu Group stores, following its earlier launch at Hamad International Airport.
The rollout came via a collaboration between NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL), Qatar National Bank (QNB), and Japanese payment gateway NETSTARS. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the service, calling it a step toward deeper India- Qatar financial integration and smoother cross-border trade.
By letting Indian visitors pay via UPI in Qatari retail outlets, this move reduces reliance on foreign cards or currency conversion hassles and strengthens India’s push to globalize its digital payments footprint.
