IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is preparing to connect India and Greece with direct flights starting January 2026, pending regulatory approvals. The service will mark the debut of the airline’s brand-new Airbus A321XLR aircraft, making Athens the first international destination to be served by this next-generation plane.

According to the airline, IndiGo is scheduled to receive India’s first A321XLR by the end of 2025. Once inducted into its fleet, the aircraft will be deployed on six weekly direct flights between India and Athens. Earlier this year, businessline reported that IndiGo was on track to take delivery of the XLR by late 2025, enabling this expansion.

The A321XLR (Extra Long Range) is a state-of-the-art single-aisle aircraft capable of flying up to 8,700 km, offering airlines the ability to operate nonstop routes traditionally reserved for wide-body planes. For IndiGo, the aircraft opens doors to new long-haul destinations across Southern and Central Europe while retaining the cost-efficiency of its narrow-body operations.

Initially, the airline plans to connect Athens with both Delhi and Mumbai, with three flights per week on each route. Once operational, IndiGo will be the only Indian carrier offering direct services between India and Greece. The airline also highlighted that these flights will provide seamless access to popular Greek destinations such as Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete, along with convenient links to other regional European cities.

IndiGo’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, described the move as a milestone in the carrier’s international growth strategy:

“This new aviation corridor is a strategic step in IndiGo’s international expansion and aligns perfectly with India’s growing economy and tourism industry. With flight schedules designed for convenience, we are confident this route will boost both business and leisure travel. Going forward, we also intend to expand our reach within Greece, further strengthening connectivity between the two countries.”

The India–Greece route is expected to stimulate travel across multiple segments, including leisure, business, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and destination weddings—a fast-growing sector for Indian outbound tourism.

By expanding into Greece, IndiGo is also signaling its intent to deepen its footprint across Europe. The A321XLR’s extended range will enable the airline to consider more nonstop services from India to destinations previously beyond the reach of narrow-body aircraft.

With the launch, IndiGo not only becomes a pioneer in opening direct India–Greece flights but also sets the stage for a broader European network, leveraging the efficiency and capability of its upcoming A321XLR fleet.
