Ottawa: Indian nationals were among five people who died in a major house fire in Brampton, Ontario, early on November 20, according to the Consulate General of India in Toronto. Officials said they have contacted the affected families and are extending all necessary assistance.
The blaze, reported by CTV News, broke out around 2.15 am at a residence on Banas Way, near McLaughlin and Remembrance roads. Three women and a young toddler were killed in the incident, which is now under investigation by Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal.
A pregnant woman who jumped out of a window to escape the flames survived with injuries, though her unborn child did not. Emergency responders said the house was already engulfed by the time firefighters arrived, making rescue extremely difficult.
Local authorities have not yet established the cause of the fire, and forensic teams are examining the property to determine what triggered the deadly blaze. The tragedy has sent shockwaves through Brampton’s large South Asian community, with several Indian-origin residents expressing grief and concern.
The Indian mission stated that it is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with Canadian authorities on support procedures. Officials added that consular teams remain in touch with family members of the deceased and survivors.
As investigations continue, community members have begun organising support networks and prayer gatherings for the victims. Authorities are expected to release further details once the Fire Marshal’s probe is complete.
