An Indian Air Force Tejas fighter jet crashed during a demonstration sortie at the Dubai Air Show on Friday, resulting in the death of the pilot, according to confirmations from the Indian Air Force. The crash occurred around 2:10 pm local time near Al Maktoum International Airport, where the aircraft was performing an aerial display as part of India’s participation in the event.
Eyewitnesses reported the jet losing stability before descending rapidly and catching fire on impact. Emergency teams at the venue responded immediately, but the pilot succumbed to injuries. The IAF issued a statement expressing deep regret and said a Court of Inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the accident.
The Tejas, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, is India’s indigenous light combat aircraft and a centrepiece of the country’s defence modernisation efforts. The aircraft has performed at several international air shows, and its presence in Dubai was part of India’s efforts to showcase defence manufacturing capabilities to global audiences.
The crash drew significant attention given the high-profile setting and the aircraft’s symbolic role in India’s push for self-reliance in defence. The Ministry of Defence has so far dismissed social-media speculation about technical issues, including allegations of an oil leak, calling such reports incorrect.
The Dubai Air Show organisers expressed condolences and said safety teams are supporting the ongoing investigation. The incident has cast a shadow over India’s participation at the event, while officials emphasise that findings from the inquiry will be made public once completed.
The IAF has also initiated formal processes to support the pilot’s family and coordinate with authorities in Dubai regarding procedural requirements following the crash.
