Indian student fire deaths in US have taken a tragic turn after a second Indian national succumbed to severe burn injuries from a house fire in Albany, New York, authorities said. The incident has raised concern among Indian student communities in the US, with two young Indians losing their lives within 48 hours of each other.
The Indian Consulate in New York confirmed that Anvesh Sarapelli died on Saturday due to extensive injuries sustained in the fire. His death came a day after Sahaja Reddy Udumala, a 24-year-old Indian student pursuing a Master’s degree in Albany, also passed away following critical burn injuries from the same incident. The consulate stated it remains in close contact with their families and is providing all necessary assistance, including support for local procedures and coordination with agencies.
US authorities said the fire broke out on December 4 at a residence on Quail Street, where emergency responders found four adult victims inside the home. All received immediate treatment at the scene before being transported to medical facilities for specialised care. Two survivors continue to receive treatment for severe injuries.
The incident has prompted conversations among Indian students fire safety in shared accommodations, especially during winter when heating equipment is frequently used. Community groups and student associations have urged students to remain attentive to safety guidelines, check housing infrastructure, and ensure local emergency contacts are accessible.
Indian student fire deaths in US cases have increased attention on the support network available for international students. Fundraisers have been launched to support funeral expenses and repatriation. The consulate has reiterated its commitment to assisting affected families and coordinating with local authorities on the investigation.
