Ikshu Shinde, a Class 12 student at the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai, has become the first Indian to be selected as a Global Future Scholar and Diplomat by the Garibay Institute for Soft Power and Public Diplomacy in the United States. The institute functions as a think tank focusing on advancing soft power, international dialogue and cultural diplomacy.
The recognition is awarded to young leaders who demonstrate intellectual promise, leadership potential and a strong commitment to democratic values. As part of the programme, Shinde will join a select global cohort trained to navigate complex international issues, public policy, diplomacy and cross-cultural engagement. The initiative aims to prepare emerging voices to participate in global discussions and shape perspectives on international cooperation and exchanges.
A statement from DAIS highlighted Shinde’s civic involvement, noting that she has worked at the grassroots level during state and general elections. She has also carried out initiatives supporting senior citizens and encouraging intergenerational bonds through community engagement projects. The school described her selection as an example of how student participation in public-oriented work can translate into international recognition.
The programme is expected to provide exposure to global policy environments, international research forums and collaborative platforms involving academics, diplomats and cultural institutions. Education observers say the achievement signals growing visibility for Indian students in global leadership spaces, particularly in areas beyond STEM and business.
Shinde’s inclusion in the cohort marks a milestone for Indian representation in youth-driven diplomacy programmes and highlights the increasing interest of international institutions in India’s emerging leadership talent.
