India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the India Maritime Week in Mumbai today, emphasising the country’s vision for safety, stability and self-reliance in its maritime domain. The minister highlighted India’s 7,500 km coastline, 13 coastal states and union territories, and an Exclusive Economic Zone of 2.37 million sq km, underscoring the nation’s strategic role bridging the Indo-Pacific and Global South.
Addressing the gathering, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal noted that India Maritime Week has become one of the world’s most significant maritime events, with participation from 85 countries, over 500 exhibitors and 40 forums. The theme for IMW 2025 — “Uniting Oceans, One Maritime Vision” — draws on the Indian ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
In a statement, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that Vadhwan Port will be developed as India’s largest port and among the world’s top ten, bolstering investment in the ship-building ecosystem. Leaders from Gujarat, Goa and Odisha also joined the event, signalling broad political support.
The launch of India Maritime Week marks a pivotal moment in India’s push to modernise port infrastructure, expand the blue economy, and elevate its maritime ambitions under the twin frameworks of Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
