Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has revealed that its Hong Kong branch was penalised by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) for violations of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing Ordinance (AMLO) during the period from May 2021 to January 2024.
In a stock exchange filing, the Chennai-headquartered public sector bank did not disclose the exact amount of the penalty but clarified that the financial impact is not material. The bank added that it has implemented corrective measures to prevent future lapses and strengthen its internal compliance processes.
The HKMA cited serious shortcomings in IOB-HK’s transaction monitoring systems and management oversight related to AML and counter-terrorist financing controls. The regulator directed the bank to:
-
Conduct a comprehensive review of transaction alerts generated by its monitoring system,
-
Submit a detailed remedial action plan, and
-
Provide an independent external assessment to verify the effectiveness of the corrective steps.
IOB has confirmed compliance with the directives and reiterated its commitment to regulatory standards.
