Flying Officer Nandini Rajpurohit, an Indian-origin officer in the Royal Australian Air Force, has become one of the first graduates of Australia’s inaugural military space operations programme.
Rajpurohit was among 16 officers to complete the Space Initial Employment Training course, qualifying as a space operations officer. She has now been posted to the 1 Space Surveillance Unit, according to the Australian Defence Ministry.
With an academic background in computer science, mathematics and statistics, Rajpurohit transitioned into the space domain after serving at the headquarters of the Royal Australian Air Force. She said the programme challenged participants to process large amounts of information and make decisions under pressure.
Rajpurohit credited her early interest in STEM subjects and involvement in setting up a space club during her university years for sparking her passion for the field. She described space as a domain that supports operations across all branches of the military.
The Australian Defence Ministry said the training programme combined individual and team exercises to prepare officers for real-world scenarios. It added that adaptability and rapid decision-making are becoming increasingly important as space capabilities evolve.
The graduation marks a milestone for Australia’s growing space ambitions and highlights the contribution of professionals of Indian origin to emerging technologies and defence capabilities around the world.
