An Indian national who entered the United States illegally three years ago has been charged with homicide after a fatal road accident involving a semi-truck. The crash took place in Deschutes County, Oregon, on the night of November 24.
The driver, identified as Rajinder Kumar, 32, was operating a commercial freightliner when his vehicle was stopped in a jackknifed position, blocking several highway lanes. A car driven by William Micah Carter, 25, with passenger Jennifer Lynn Lower, 24, struck the trailer of the truck. Both Carter and Lower were declared dead at the scene. Kumar was not injured.
Oregon State Police said the crash led to major disruption on the highway for nearly seven hours. Initial investigation indicated that the trailer was positioned perpendicular to the lanes of travel when the collision occurred.
Kumar has been charged with criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangering. The US Department of Homeland Security said Immigration and Customs Enforcement has lodged an arrest detainer for him.
According to DHS, Kumar entered the United States illegally on November 28, 2022, near Lukeville, Arizona. The agency described him as a criminal illegal from India. Further investigation into the case is ongoing.
