Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Palakkad in Kerala, may be executed in Yemen on July 16. She was arrested in 2017 for killing a Yemeni man named Talal Abdo Mehdi.
The Indian government told the Supreme Court that it has tried all possible ways to help, but there are big problems because Yemen is not officially connected with India through diplomatic channels. The area where Nimisha is jailed is controlled by Houthi rebels, making it even harder.
The only possible way to stop the execution is by paying “blood money” (compensation) to the victim’s family. But the victim’s family is not ready to accept it. The government also said this money deal is a private matter, not something the Indian government can control.
What Happened In the Case?
Nimisha went to Yemen in 2008 to work as a nurse.
She married Tommy Thomas in 2011.
When the war started in 2014, her husband and daughter came back to India, but she stayed.
She later opened a clinic with the Yemeni man.
She says he abused her, took her passport, and controlled her life.
She says she only gave him medicine to make him sleep so she could get her passport back, but he died from the medicine.
His body was cut up and hidden, and Nimisha was charged with murder.
The court in Yemen rejected her appeals, and she is now in Sana’a prison, waiting to be executed.
People Asking for Help
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote to Prime Minister Modi, asking him to help save her life.
He said this is a case where the woman deserves sympathy.
Congress leader KC Venugopal also requested the PM to take urgent action.
But the Indian government says it has reached its limit and cannot do more due to the difficult situation in Yemen.
