An Indian expatriate from Kerala was killed in a gas cylinder explosion at a car showroom in Dubai, with the Indian Consulate extending assistance to his family and coordinating the repatriation of his mortal remains.
The explosion occurred at a showroom on Sheikh Zayed Road, one of Dubai’s busiest commercial corridors. According to local reports, the blast took place while emergency personnel were responding to a fire at the premises. The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation.
The Indian Consulate in Dubai confirmed the death and said it is working closely with the victim’s family and local authorities to facilitate the return of the body to India. Officials have also assured all necessary consular support during the process.
The incident has once again drawn attention to workplace safety for Indian expatriates employed across the Gulf region, where millions of Indians work in sectors including construction, retail, automobiles and industrial services.
According to recent data from the Ministry of External Affairs, more than 800 Indian nationals died in workplace accidents overseas between 2023 and 2025. Gulf countries accounted for around 55 per cent of these fatalities, with the United Arab Emirates recording one of the highest numbers after Saudi Arabia. Worker groups have attributed many of these incidents to inadequate safety measures, technical failures and insufficient workplace training.
The latest tragedy comes amid renewed discussions on strengthening occupational safety standards and ensuring better protection for Indian workers overseas. The Indian government has consistently said its diplomatic missions remain committed to providing assistance to Indian nationals facing emergencies abroad.
