Actor and politician Kangana Ranaut delivered a scathing critique of dating apps during a recent YouTube interview. She labeled the platforms as “gutter” and “neech” (low), questioning the character of women who use them and declaring she would never engage with such people—a remark she said stemmed from traditional values.

Ranaut argued that modern dating has stripped away decorum. “Every woman and man has needs,” she acknowledged, but she asked whether people meet those needs elegantly or resort to “har raat nikal jaana” – going out nightly to find someone. She implied that individuals on dating apps lack validation and confidence, contrasting them with those introduced through workplaces, colleges, or arranged marriages.

She went further, asserting that dating apps are populated by “losers” who couldn’t meet a partner through conventional means. For her, successful people don’t rely on these apps. When the interviewer raised the idea of live-in relationships, Ranaut insisted they are detrimental to women. She suggested that, in such arrangements, if a woman becomes pregnant, there’s no assurance of support. She emphasized the importance of marriage as a promise of loyalty, and warned that, biologically, men may abandon women after impregnating them.

She drew widespread criticism on social media for views termed as “outdated” and “regressive” by many users. Netizens went so far as to question her character and comment on how hypocritical it is given her history with being in the limelight while unapologetically dating married actors.
