The Union government on Wednesday rolled back its order mandating smartphone manufacturers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on all new devices. The reversal comes after two days of protests by opposition parties, digital rights groups and civil society activists, who argued that compulsory installation of the app would amount to a violation of citizens’ privacy and digital autonomy.
Critics said the directive lacked transparency and raised concerns about potential misuse of user data. Following the public outcry, the government rescinded the order, saying further consultations would be held before taking any decision on mandatory digital safety measures.
