Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed that India will bid to host the 2036 Olympics. The PM affirmed that India hopes to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, saying that the nation is devoted to turning this ambition into reality and is excited about hosting the four-yearly international sports spectacle.
The prime minister was speaking at the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai when he announced that India “will leave no stone unturned” to host the Olympics in 2036, describing it as the dream of 140 crore Indians. He also added that the country also wants to host the Youth Olympics in 2029. The Prime Minister stressed that because of its rapidly growing economy and well-developed infrastructure, India is well-positioned to host major international events. He cited the G20 Summit as an illustration of India’s capacity for planning events across all industries, with activities taking place in more than 60 cities across the nation. He made no mention of a host city, while rumours suggest Gujarat’s Ahmedabad could be the finalist.
India has never hosted the Olympics before, and the most high-profile sporting event that the country hosted was the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010. Notably, if its application is accepted, India will only be the fourth Asian nation to host the Games.
India is currently hosting the ODI Cricket World Cup. Modi’s announcement came after the Indian team convincingly defeated arch-rival Pakistan in the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Modi said that “sports is not just for winning medals but is a medium to win hearts. Sports belong to all. It not only prepares champions but also promotes peace, progress, and wellness. Therefore, sports is another medium of uniting the world”.
After India declared interest in staging the Olympics in 2036, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the IOC leadership at the opening ceremony of its session in Mumbai, the IOC has announced that the decision on the 2036 Olympics host will not come before 2026. The International Olympic Committee said on Sunday that the decision on which city will host the 2036 summer Olympics will be taken in three years at the earliest. Poland, Mexico, and Indonesia have also expressed interest in bidding for those games.
“Any decision will be made by a new IOC leadership and not before 2026 or 2027,” said Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, who chairs the IOC’s future host commission. The IOC is set to elect a new president in 2025. “I am pleased to report that the number of interested parties in hosting the games is in double digits,” she said. She did not clarify whether that figure included both summer and winter Games candidatures or just the 2036 summer Olympics.
