India is considering a new “green channel” mechanism to make it easier for European and British companies to invest in the country, with senior officials expected to directly oversee investor grievances and help fast-track government approvals.
The proposed mechanism is modelled on existing initiatives such as Japan Plus and Korea Plus, which help investors navigate regulatory processes and coordinate with government agencies. The green channel is expected to provide dedicated handholding for companies from Europe and the UK seeking to expand their presence in India.
The move comes as India looks to utilise recent trade agreements to boost investment flows. The mechanism is likely to be aligned with the India-EU trade deal and the India-UK agreement, with both expected to create greater opportunities for businesses to invest across the respective markets.
Senior government officials are expected to directly oversee the proposed mechanism to ensure quicker resolution of issues faced by investors. The aim is to reduce delays in securing approvals and provide companies with a clearer route through India’s regulatory system.
European investment already plays a significant role in India’s economy, while the UK remains another major source of foreign investment. By creating a dedicated facilitation mechanism, India hopes to convert the momentum generated by its trade agreements into increased capital inflows and stronger business partnerships.
The proposed green channel reflects India’s broader push to improve ease of doing business and attract long-term foreign investment as it seeks deeper economic integration with Europe and the UK.
