India’s efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence ecosystem received a boost this week with the launch of a homegrown AI video-generation model designed to better understand the country’s cultural and linguistic diversity.
Bengaluru-based startup Avataar AI unveiled “Varya”, an indigenous AI video model developed to generate content that more accurately reflects Indian contexts, including local festivals, clothing, food traditions and architectural styles. The company says the model addresses a long-standing challenge faced by many global AI systems, which often struggle to interpret or represent Indian cultural nuances accurately.
The launch comes as India seeks to expand its footprint in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector through initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission, which aims to support the development of domestic AI capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign technologies.
According to Avataar AI, Varya has been built to generate videos more efficiently while significantly reducing the computing resources required for production. The company claims the model can create videos substantially faster than conventional systems while lowering costs, potentially making advanced AI video generation more accessible to businesses and content creators.
The startup, which has received backing from Peak XV Partners and support under the IndiaAI Mission, believes the technology could help Indian brands, enterprises and creators produce culturally relevant content at scale.
Speaking at the launch, senior government officials highlighted the importance of research-driven innovation and indigenous AI development as India looks to establish itself as a major player in the global AI race.
The development reflects a broader push by Indian companies and policymakers to build locally relevant AI solutions rather than relying solely on models developed overseas. As competition intensifies between countries seeking leadership in artificial intelligence, initiatives such as Varya are being seen as important steps toward strengthening India’s technological capabilities.
With demand for AI-generated video content rising globally, the success of homegrown models like Varya could play a key role in shaping India’s position in the next phase of the digital economy.
