India’s relations with the United Arab Emirates have hit a temporary setback after Ravi Uppal, one of the main accused in the ₹6,000 crore Mahadev online betting and money-laundering case, reportedly vanished from Dubai despite being under local surveillance.
Uppal, who was arrested in Dubai in late 2023 under an Interpol Red Corner Notice, was awaiting extradition to India. However, Indian agencies now believe he fled to another country, possibly one without an extradition treaty with India. His disappearance has raised questions over the coordination between the two nations’ law enforcement agencies.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have been investigating the Mahadev App case, which allegedly operated a global illegal betting network with links across India, the UAE, and several other countries.
The Supreme Court has directed the ED to submit a detailed report on Uppal’s whereabouts and to strengthen cooperation with foreign counterparts. Officials say the episode highlights gaps in international extradition processes and the need for stronger diplomatic and legal mechanisms to track high-profile fugitives.
The incident comes at a time when India and the UAE are expanding strategic and economic cooperation, including recent defence and trade agreements. Analysts note that while the case may not derail ties, it exposes the challenges of cross-border law enforcement in high-stakes financial crimes.
