India is keeping a close watch on Middle East developments where the conflict has taken a new turn as Israel bombed a Doha location yesterday.
On September 9th, several loud explosions echoed across Qatar’s capital city Doha,
marking an unprecedented turn in the Israel and Hamas conflict. For the first time, Israel
claims to have launched a direct strike on Hamas leaders, while they refrained from
disclosing exact details of the location, they stated the operation was a “targeted attack
on the top leadership of Hamas,” inside Qatar, a nation long regarded as a key mediator
in ceasefire negotiations.
The airstrike reportedly came as retaliation for the October 7, 2023 massacre in
southern Israel. It followed closely after Hamas’ armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades,
claimed responsibility for a shooting on Monday that left six people dead at a bus stop
near Jerusalem. Intelligence sources indicated that the leaders targeted in the strike
were considered the “brains behind years of terror planning” and were directly
accountable for the attacks that sparked the current conflict.
Office of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a sharp statement,
branding the strike “a wholly independent Israeli mission” aimed at Hamas’s top
command structure. Israeli forces emphasized that the attack relied on advanced
weapons and intelligence measures to limit civilian casualties.
Following the attack, Qatar erupted in anger and its Foreign Ministry has described the
airstrikes as a “criminal act and blatant violation of international law,” accusing Israel of
deliberately hitting residential towers that sheltered members of Hamas’s political
bureau. Qatar’s Majed al-Ansari spoke to the media and stated that the strike posed a
“serious threat to the safety of Qataris and residents of Doha,” and directly accused
Israel of destabilizing the region with “reckless behavior.”
The timing of the attack raises the stakes. Qatar not only hosts Hamas’s political office
but is also home to Al Udeid Air Base, the largest U.S. military facility in the Middle East.
Therefore, the airstrike risks escalating the war beyond Israel and Hamas borders and
potentially drawing in wider regional powers of the middle east.
The region which was once a proxy battleground, has now officially landed directly in the
Gulf’s backyard. With Israel showing its willingness to hit Hamas leadership wherever it
resides, and Qatar signaling it will not tolerate such breaches of sovereignty, the
confrontation has officially crossed a dangerous new frontier. This will definitely heighten tensions across the Middle East and raise fears of a wider, uncontrollable conflict
