India’s consumer economy witnessed a historic surge in sales this Navratri, recording the highest festive business in over ten years. The remarkable growth was fueled by the Modi government’s NextGen GST reforms, which significantly reduced tax rates across several categories, making goods and services more affordable for the middle class and aspirational buyers. The reforms not only lowered prices but also encouraged families to upgrade to new vehicles, invest in modern appliances, and spend more freely on lifestyle products.
The combination of lower taxation, attractive financing options, and rising disposable incomes has turned the festive season into a period of record-breaking consumption, reflecting the growing confidence of India’s middle-class households.
Automobile Sector: Record Deliveries and Bookings
The automobile industry emerged as the biggest beneficiary of the consumer spending wave during Navratri. Car makers reported unprecedented numbers, setting benchmarks not seen in at least a decade.
-
Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, witnessed a 100% growth in Navratri sales compared to last year, making it the best festive performance in more than ten years. The company recorded an astonishing 150,000 bookings and expects to cross 200,000 bookings by the end of the festive cycle. During the nine days of Navratri alone, Maruti delivered 1.65 lakh vehicles, including a record-breaking 30,000 cars on Day 1, the company’s highest single-day delivery in its 35-year history.
-
Mahindra & Mahindra, known for its rugged SUVs such as the XUV700 and Scorpio N, reported a 60% year-on-year jump in retail sales during Navratri, underlining the strong consumer preference for SUVs.
-
Hyundai Motor India also registered robust growth. Demand for its flagship SUVs, the Creta and Venue, drove the segment’s share to over 72% of Hyundai’s total Navratri sales, the highest in the company’s history.
-
Two-wheeler sales, a key indicator of rural demand, also showed strong momentum. Hero MotoCorp reported double showroom footfalls, with significant traction in the commuter motorcycle segment, suggesting broad-based recovery in smaller towns and villages.
-
Tata Motors delivered more than 50,000 vehicles, led by strong demand for popular models such as the Altroz, Punch, Nexon, and Tiago.
-
Bajaj Auto, another key player in the two-wheeler segment, also posted strong Navratri sales, highlighting overall optimism in mobility demand.
Consumer Electronics: Double-Digit Growth and Premium Purchases
While automobiles took the spotlight, consumer electronics also witnessed a festive boom, driven by both affordability and aspirational upgrades.
-
Haier India reported a staggering 85% surge in sales, with premium products leading the charge. The company nearly sold out its Diwali stock of 85-inch and 100-inch premium televisions priced above ₹2.5 lakh. Additionally, Haier sold between 300–350 units of 65-inch TVs per day during Navratri, reflecting the growing appetite for big-screen entertainment among Indian consumers.
-
Reliance Retail, India’s largest retailer, reported 20–25% higher sales compared to last year. Large-screen TVs, smartphones, and fashion apparel were among the top-performing categories.
-
Vijay Sales, a leading electronics retail chain, also posted over 20% growth in Navratri sales.
-
LG Electronics India described its Navratri business as showing “exponential growth,” with demand across home appliances and premium electronics categories.
The festive spirit clearly translated into stronger demand for aspirational purchases, with consumers showing readiness to invest in premium appliances, high-end TVs, and fashionable lifestyle products, all supported by flexible EMI options and festive discounts.
GST Reforms: A Catalyst for Consumer Confidence
The surge in spending this Navratri can be traced back to the government’s strategic decision to rationalise GST slabs. By lowering tax rates on both essential and aspirational items, the reforms not only eased the tax burden but also made products more accessible. This in turn unlocked pent-up demand and reinforced consumer confidence, creating a positive cycle of spending across sectors.
Retailers and manufacturers across categories reported sales growth ranging from 25% to 100%, reflecting the wide-reaching impact of the tax reforms. Analysts note that this year’s consumption wave is particularly significant as the first half of India’s festive season—spanning Onam, Durga Puja, and Dussehra—accounts for nearly 40–45% of total annual festive sales, making it the largest consumption period in the country.
A Festive Season of Confidence and Growth
This Navratri will be remembered as a turning point for India’s consumption story. From automobiles and two-wheelers to electronics and lifestyle products, consumer sentiment has clearly shifted into high gear. The convergence of GST cuts, rising aspirations, and festive offers has not only boosted immediate sales but also set the stage for sustained momentum through Diwali and beyond.
With the economy’s growth increasingly led by domestic demand, the record-breaking Navratri sales underscore the strength of India’s consumption-driven growth model and highlight the crucial role of reforms in unlocking the nation’s economic potential.
